Step competition for friend groups

Lowest steps buys the ice cream.

Race your friends by the day, week or month. Your phone counts the steps. When the round locks, the lowest average owes the group a treat.

Free for groups of up to 10. iPhone and Android race together.

A group’s live board mid-week: members ranked by average steps a day, with a line saying who is buying right now.

How it works

Three steps. Then a lot more steps.

  1. Start a group

Pick daily, weekly or monthly rounds, the day they start, and what the loser owes. Ice cream is the classic.

Weekly, Wednesday to Tuesday. Loser buys ice cream.

  2. Send the link

Friends tap it, install, and land straight in the group with no code to type. iPhone and Android race together.

  3. Just walk

Steps sync in the background, so nothing needs starting. When the round locks, the lowest average buys.

Rahul’s profile: his record in the group, then this round day by day. Tuesday shows 6,069 steps, 34% typed by hand and not counted, with Sick day and Void day buttons.

Fair play

A score nobody argues with.

The biggest fight in step apps is over the result: late syncs, numbers that flip, the friend with 50,000 steps before breakfast. So every number is out in the open.

  • No watch needed

Your phone already counts steps. Wearing a Fitbit, Garmin or Samsung watch? That counts too.

  • Everyone sees the day-by-day

Tap anyone on the board to see every day they walked. A day that never synced is marked, not hidden.

  • Hand-typed steps are flagged

Steps typed into Apple Health or Health Connect show with their percentage. Your group decides if they count.

  • Sick days

Everyone gets excused days each round, one a week by default. The flu doesn’t make you the loser.

  • Locks after everyone’s day ends

A round waits for the last friend’s local midnight, then 12 more hours so late syncs land. London and New York both get a full Sunday.

  • Odd days stand out

A 50,000-step day from someone who usually does 6,000 gets a warning dot. Admins can void a day that was clearly a phone on a washing machine.

Groups, friends and just you

Walk with a crew, a friend, or yourself.

Three tabs. Use one, use all of them. The Me tab works before you’ve invited anyone.

Group tab

Your rules

Daily, weekly or monthly, starting any day. Most steps or most improved. Sick days, lock time and up to 10 forfeits, one drawn each round.

Creating a group and setting its rules: weekly rounds starting on Wednesday, how scoring works and what hand-typed steps do.

Friends tab

Race friends, no group needed

Share one link and you’re friends. See who walked most today, this week or this month. Only friends see your steps.

The Friends board for this week: Sam at 49,055 steps, Priya at 38,141, you at 22,559 and Rahul at 12,645.

Me tab

Your own goals

Rings for steps and calories, a goal streak, week and month charts, and personal bests. Works on day one with nobody else.

The Me tab: 6,860 of 8,000 steps today, 1,140 steps to the goal, with best day and best week below.

Trackers

Wearing a tracker? It counts.

Your tracker already sends steps to Apple Health or Health Connect, and Loser Buys reads them from there. A watch and a phone never count twice, and the app shows which one today’s number came from.

  • Fitbit / Google Health
  • Garmin
  • Samsung Health(Android)
  • Oura
  • Whoop
  • Withings
  • Zepp / Amazfit
  • Xiaomi
  • Polar
  • Apple Watch(iPhone)

FAQ

Questions before the first round.

Is Loser Buys free?

Yes. Free covers 3 groups of up to 10 people, with every rule a friend group needs: sick days, voiding, the owes list and alerts. Pro is $14.99 a year with a 14-day free trial, or $2.99 a month, and one organizer’s Pro covers everyone in their group. Friends never pay to join.

Does it work without a watch?

Yes. iPhones and most Android phones count steps on their own, and Loser Buys reads them from Apple Health or Health Connect. A watch or tracker only helps if your phone lives on a desk all day.

Does it work with Fitbit?

Yes, through your phone’s health app. The Google Health app (formerly Fitbit) writes steps to Apple Health on iPhone and to Health Connect on Android, and Loser Buys reads them from there. Garmin, Samsung Health, Oura, Withings and others work the same way.

Can iPhone and Android friends compete?

Yes. Everyone joins the same group from the same link, whatever phone they have, and the board ranks them together.

How is the loser decided?

The lowest average steps per day loses. When the round ends, each person’s steps are added up over their counted days and divided by that number of days. Ties at the bottom all buy, and nobody loses if everyone ties.

What if I’m sick?

Mark it as a sick day and that day drops out of your average. Each group sets how many you get per round: one a week by default, three a month.

When does a round lock?

A round locks 12 hours after the last person’s final day ends, by default. Everyone walks their own local days, so friends in other time zones get their full days, and late syncs land before anyone is named.

Do I have to open the app for my steps to count?

No. Steps sync in the background on both platforms. Opening the app syncs too, and you get a reminder a few hours before results lock if yours look stale.

What stops someone from cheating?

Everything is visible. Hand-typed steps show with their percentage, and groups can leave them out. Days far above someone’s usual get a warning dot, and admins can void a day. Everyone can open everyone’s day-by-day numbers.

What does the loser actually owe?

Whatever your group picks: ice cream, coffee, a round of drinks, washing everyone’s car. Add up to 10 and one is drawn each round. The app keeps an owes list, and you settle it in real life.

Who can see my steps?

Nobody by default. Friends see your daily totals, and people in a group with you see your steps for that group’s rounds. Calories and distance stay on your own Me tab.
